Croesoswallt Archers, the oldest archery club in Shropshire, can trace its roots back to 1957. Since then they have relocated several times, most notably to the orthopaedic hospital in Gobowen in the mid-1970s where they merged with the Orthopaedic Archery Club. Recent hospital expansion necessitated a search for a new home. Sadly, despite its longstanding contributions to the community – promoting social inclusion, well-being, and accessibility – Croesoswallt Archers has never had a permanent base. But since 2020 we have been working solidly towards helping them achieve the goal of having an everlasting home, here at the British Ironwork Centre, where there is the space for them to thrive. With the support of the British Ironwork Centre the club has built a genuine base to bring the sport of archery to the community of Oswestry and wider northwest Shropshire, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can participate and benefit from this historic sport.

Here at the British Ironwork Centre, we have the space to accommodate them as well as having the enthusiasm of the club to bring about a solid base for them to operate throughout the whole of Oswestry within the shared space of the British Ironwork Centre. As such, we have created a vision for how this permanent home could look. This solid structure not only facilitates their archery needs including both indoor and outdoor firing ranges, but also encapsulates their desire to be an eco-friendly association. Creating such a facility, of course, has its challenges including funding, planning permission, and ensuring that the building is in harmony with the local ecological ideals. However, with such strong support for the club thanks to their values surrounding inclusivity and accessibility for individuals of all abilities, we believe that this vision can become a reality.

In the Community

What we truly admire about this club is its inclusive approach to welcoming individuals with physical and mental disabilities, ensuring everyone feels valued and supported. Archery’s accessibility to all skill levels allows the club to cultivate a strong sense of community and belonging. Additionally, they have collaborated with local schools to introduce young students to the sport and teach fundamental techniques. Their commitment extends beyond the sport, as they have supported various charities, including Multiple Sclerosis and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, since their presence at the British Ironwork Centre. As the only archery club in the area, we are confident they will receive strong community backing and look forward to working alongside Croesoswallt Archers to help establish their permanent home at the British Ironwork Centre.
