School Trip FAQ

How Much Does It Cost To Book A School Trip?

Educational settings are usually charged at £6 per head to visit the Centre (this cost can be mitigated, see T&C’s). Your trip here includes entry, and access to the full site – including free-artisan demonstrations, activity maps and trails.

What can we do there?

We have plenty of activities for you to do whilst here depending on what you have planned for your learning objectives. We have interactive & educational trails such as the Extinction Trail and Nature Walks. We also have fun activities such as the Minion and Superhero Trails which allow for lots of walking and discovery. We have four fabulous Artisan Units providing demonstrations on various crafts from woodwork to crochet. There are many great drawing, painting and photography opportunities available across the site and we also have many fantastic projects on-going here which tie in nicely to out-of-classroom learning. Our most famous projects include the Knife Angel & Manchester Bee, our Deforestation Sculpture & Gorilla Apocalypse. This is just a few of the projects you can see here that have a strong focus on efforts such as reusing & recycling, to community safety and looking after our climate.

What Facilities Do You Offer?

It’s free to use our facilities whilst visiting, we have coach parking available, toilet & baby change facilities. Children are welcome to bring their own packed lunch, or we have buffet lunches available at a subsidised rate. Due to our undercover areas being limited during busy times, it may be that packed lunches brought onto site are eaten on the coach during wet weather. On dry days we allow school groups to picnic within the grounds.

Do we Conduct a Risk Assessment?

We ask that a full risk assessment is undertaken for your group prior to your visit. We do not take any responsibility or liability for your group. Additional free entry passes can be provided to those visiting to carry out the assessment. Please note on our T&Cs page the site safety notices which can be incorporated into your assessment.

What if it’s Raining?

The majority of your visit will be spent outdoors – we recommend waterproof clothing such as raincoats or puddle suits, sun hats and suitable shoes.

Can We Bring Our Own Activities?

Although we offer plenty to see and do for all ages, we also encourage schools to plan their own activities, if required. Teachers are welcome to use our centre as a resource, for example bringing along sketch pads, or perhaps cameras for photography activities – wherever your learning takes you!

Do You Accept All School Ages?

We do! We would advise that our Centre is most beneficial and suitable to primary school age children, but there is something to see for students of all ages.

What Should We Wear?

For health and safety purposes appropriate footwear, particularly with children, should be worn at all times. We have a large outdoor area and although there are paths, there are also a number of grass areas that can get muddy in wetter weather. We would recommend dressing for the weather, such as wearing raincoats or sun hats.

Planning Your Visit

We want to make your trip to Ironworks as easy as can be!

We would love to help you plan everything so your day runs smoothly.

We’ve got plenty of trails and activities to do onsite, including demonstrations by our wonderful artisans. If you’re interested in booking an artisan demonstration, please contact us and we will arrange this for you.

Upon arrival we will greet your group and help with navigating around site. We will then meet you again prior to you departure. We do also have a Social Media team on site who frequently take pictures of visitors. Please notify us prior if there are individuals who do not consent to photographs – but please note, this supports us in continuing to be able to host free group visits.

“Could I say a huge thank you for allowing us to come and visit the British Ironworks yesterday. The children had an amazing day and they were mesmerised by all of the sculptures. When we drove up your drive, the childrens reactions to your sculptures was just lovely to see. We have had many parents thanking us this morning and stating just how much they enjoyed it. Also, please could you send our appreciation to Ned the wood turn. The children loved watching his demonstration and talking to him.”

St Peter's Primary and Nursery School,

“I went to this Centre as a volunteer with a school group. I have to say I was very impressed. The staff were all very welcoming and well organised for a school visit.
There are a number of sculptures of wild animals with information boards giving key details about each animal. The site also includes a ‘showroom’ or shop selling various items for the home and contains a cafe ( the coffee was delicious).

This centre is most definitely worth a visit.”

Christina,

“We visited the British Ironworks Centre for a school trip on 11th July with reception and year one children from two local federated schools. Being small schools, we were very impressed that the centre offered free school trips. Despite the visit being free of charge, the whole day was planned out for us, filled with activities and all of the resources were provided… The free ice cream before we headed back to school topped the trip off beautifully for the children. Thank you the British Ironworks Centre. We will definitely be visiting again!”
