Our Story

Whilst some may believe that there is a grand master plan or pre-disposed design behind the creation of the Ironworks, it is simply and genuinely something that has evolved over time, with family, creativity, and shared purpose at its heart.  With no set plans our story has evolved organically, allowing us to stay true to what matters most, our members, visitors, and artisans, with community engagement and involvement at the centre of our work. We believe in the power of using our art to inspire and contribute to change. Whether it’s through breath-taking sculpture, championing national and local community projects, or bringing people together to enjoy a day out, we’ve made it our mission to create a space where creativity blossoms. The Ironworks isn’t just a destination, it is a living testimony to the things we can achieve together.

Where it all began

The Ironworks began as a metal working family business over 50 years ago, rooted in a love for craftsmanship and creativity. Initially, it was focused on the versatility of ironwork, but has grown into something much more profound. As a three-generational business, our journey has been shaped by a deep desire to connect with people, using our medium of art to design and create meaningful stories, and inspire change. Over time, our vision expanded beyond showcasing metalwork to creating a space where art serves a greater purpose—raising awareness, sparking conversations, and driving action around important social and environmental issues.  The Ironworks has become not only a great day out for individuals and families, but also somewhere that inspires change. We are also the only sculpture park dedicated to recycling and reusing waste to create our art, with our sculptors working full time on site designing and creating.

Metal Work From Around The World

The Centre
With a social conscience, the Centre started, and has since, created impactful art pieces that address national issues through the medium of metal art. From the Spoon Gorilla to the infamous Knife Angel, each represent and tell a story about the small island we live on.
2010s
Every year, the Ironwork physically grows larger and stronger, creating more heartfelt sculptures and working in collaboration with charities, businesses, artisans, and enterprises. With this, our projects list and community programmes are forever growing.
Now
Who knows what the future holds, as the possibilities are truly endless. We hope you join us on our journey as we evolve and positively impact the region and the nation. Who knows where we will end and what we can do. Here's to the future!

Our Sculpture Park

Our sculptures are catalysts for change, thoughtfully designed and created to inspire action and reflection and sited across 70 acres. Each one embodies the passion and dedication of the artists and artisans who brought it to life, individuals deeply committed to the wellbeing of our planet and its people. These works address some of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, knife and gun crime, the protection of our wildlife, ecological balance, and the fight against displacement, cruelty, and waste. Through the medium of art, we aim to not only captivate your imagination but also spark conversations and inspire a collective commitment to making the world a better place. We hope you leave here not only with lasting memories of breathtaking sculptures but also with a sense of purpose and a deeper connection to the world around us. Thank you for being part of our story and for joining us in championing creativity and change.

A National Presence

The Ironworks has become a driving force for national projects across the UK, these initiatives go beyond creating stunning sculptures—they address critical issues affecting society, nature, and our shared future. One of our most notable projects is the Knife Angel, the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, crafted from over 100,000 knives surrendered to police forces across the UK. This iconic sculpture stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of knife crime, sparking important conversations and education programs in communities nationwide. The most recent creation ‘The Bee Monument’ has followed the footsteps of the Angel, however it has been created using solely surrendered firearms.

Another impactful project is our focus on environmental advocacy, including large-scale sculptures and campaigns highlighting the importance of tackling climate change, protecting wildlife, and reducing waste. From supporting rewilding efforts to addressing ecological imbalance, these projects aim to encourage sustainable practices and respect for our planet. Through these and many other community and charitable endeavors, the Ironworks has built a legacy of collaboration, working with artists, charities, schools, and local councils to turn creativity into action. By bringing people together around shared values and common goals, we continue to foster hope and awareness.
