The British Ironworks unveils its latest design to promote the importance of recycling.
In our latest bid to promote and encourage the evergrowing importance of recycling, we are planning our newest creation, a huge 2.5m tall sculpture of the beloved 60’s character, the mighty Womble.
The British Ironworks and The Wombles both aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways, so it seems fitting to add a fantastic Wombles statue with its inspirational message, to our increasing collection.
Our sculpture will be made up of broken and unwanted plastic toys that have been generously donated to us from members of the public. Parents confess that 77% of new toys gifted to their children are broken or neglected within just one year of receiving them. We want to use these plastic toys to promote awareness of this, and possibly make people think twice about what they are buying.
1.5 billion pounds of toys are thrown away each year, which means over a third of the toys being produced yearly are ending up in landfills. Many of these toys are made from plastic, which causes great damage to the environment. If we can recycle these into an inspirational sculpture, we are not only saving plastic from going to waste, but also spreading the powerful message of the dangers of overconsumption.
The Womble motto is “Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish”, and here at the British Ironwork Centre, we are constantly striving to recycle our own scrap metal into fabulous public space sculptures and scrap metal art. We are always shouting from the rooftops about the importance of sustainability and being more environmentally conscious.
