In our latest bid to encourage social change, we have designed a hard-hitting sculpture to open the conversation about the widespread, global issue of the oppression of and violence towards women.
The sculpture will be created from recycled scrap metal, and will depict a domineering Taliban soldier, pointing a gun towards a woman on the ground. Our mission is to address difficult topics in order to incite change.
Since the Taliban takeover in 2021, Afghanistan is universally cited as the country with the most severe oppression of women, with regimes such as limiting women’s education and rights to work, along with controlling how women dress and where they go.
While the UK does not experience the systemic repression of women in countries like Afghanistan, significant challenges and inequalities still persist. Primarily these impact women’s safety and economic equality. Police in England and Wales receive a domestic abuse-related call every 30 seconds, and the gender pay gap as of April 2024, shows the median hourly pay for full-time employees was 7% less for women than for men.
The statistics from around the world speak for themselves; In 2022, only 14% of all women and girls lived in countries with robust legal protection guaranteeing women’s fundamental human rights. Over 60% of countries still lack rape laws based on the principle of consent, and less than half of the global female population is protected by laws against cyber harassment.
These terrifying statistics highlight the urgent need for governments around the world to step up, and implement vital prevention and response strategies for women’s protection.
We want to keep the public in the loop about the developments of our hard-hitting sculpture, and call on members of our society, if they feel comfortable doing so, to share their survivor stories with us.
