What Does A Buddha Statue Represent?
Buddha statues typically represent the figure of Siddhartha Gautama who founded Buddhism around 2,500 years ago. On a more metaphorical level, Buddha statues serve as visual reminders of the teachings of Buddhism, which revolve around wisdom, compassion and enlightenment. However, although the term Buddha statue generally refers to Siddhartha Gautama, it can also be used to describe statues of other famous figures from Buddhism. Chief among these is Budai, who is often depicted smiling or laughing, invariably has a big belly and is sometimes referred to as ‘fat Buddha’ or ‘happy Buddha’.
