It’s no secret that cycling is one of the best sports for the body and for the mind.
As well as strengthening your muscles and improving your cardiovascular health, cycling can reduce anxiety and depression and improve self-esteem.
Cycling is a fantastic mode of transport, and we’re passionate about getting as many people on the pedals as possible!
The Dawn of Cycling
Cycling first emerged in the 19th century with the “swiftwalker”, a German invention with no pedals. Karl von Drais crafted the “swiftwalker” from a wooden beam and two wooden wheels with iron rims and leather-covered tyres.
This invention soon evolved into the velocipede, or “bone shaker” which was an early form of bicycle propelled by pedal power. The main difference between velocipedes and modern bicycles is that velocipedes had one wheel bigger than the other!
In 1885, John Kemp Starley invented in the “safety bicycle”. The addition of equally-sized wheels and a chain drive, and new developments in brakes and tyres made this machine the blueprint for the bicycles we know and love today.
Cycling in Britain
Here in Britain, we’ve got some absolutely stunning roads to cycle on. Cycling is a great way to explore your local area and see wildlife. Our roads are often enveloped by rolling hills and fields, and the scenery can be very rewarding, especially if you’ve just got to the top of a big hill!
So, get out there and start exploring! Just make sure that you always wear your helmet!
