National Youth Anti-Violence Tour & Programme – The Knife Angel

The sculpture, made from over 100,000 seized blades, was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying our critical need for social change. Not only does the Angel act as a catalyst for turning the tide on violent and aggressive behaviour, but it is also acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives who have been lost through these violent and thoughtless actions.

Where Is The Knife Angel Now?

Walsall, West Midlands

This December, the Knife Angel is situated in Gallery Square in Walsall.

Deputy council leader, Garry Perry, stated that “by showcasing this thought-provoking sculpture, our hope is that we can provoke discussion, signpost to support and empower all of our communities to choose life… Sometimes in Walsall, crime and the perception of crime can impact on the quality of life of residents.”

Mark Brindley, from The James Brindley Foundation, said: “The Knife Angel is like an accessible social influencer, providing every member of our community, with an opportunity to engage and understand the complex issues surrounding serious youth violence. We must grasp this moment, to raise awareness and to educate those who remain indifferent to the consequences of knife crime.”

“I have just come back from Carlisle College having not delivered an input in over 10 years. The Angel has really inspired me ! 3 classes of 40 young people with a wide mix of abilities, often a hard group to engage however it felt so easy due to having the Angel in the town and the many questions. I can certainly say that in 29 years in policing this is certainly one of the best initiatives I have been involved in and the City has really embraced the Angel”

Chris, Sergeant, Cumbria Police Constabulary

“The visit of the Knife Angel to Lancashire has, without doubt, produced higher levels of interaction with the public, right across the country, and the information received has helped to drive activity to keep our communities safe.”

Temporary Chief Inspector Dave Oldfield, Lancashire Violence Reduction Network

“The Knife Angel is an emotive, thought-provoking monument which is helping to educate and raise awareness of the increasing knife crime epidemic on Britain’s streets. It’s my hope that the Angel will encourage open conversations in homes, differing community groups and schools, helping our young people to understand the horrific consequences of carrying and using a knife.”

Rachel Webb, who lost her son Tom to knife crime, Derby

“For the 28 days that the sculpture is in the city we hope it will be used as a catalyst for a range of activities, particularly aimed at young people, to divert them away from knife crime and violence.”

Jack Atwall, Project Manager, Derby

It’s fantastic to see the Knife Angel here in Lancashire. The statue is a powerful symbol and great opportunity to raise awareness of the issue of knife crime and the devastating effect it has on individuals, their families, and entire communities.
