Kids Activities at the British Ironwork Centre

Whether your child loves an energy-filled afternoon or enjoys the quieter moments of life, our kid’s activities are designed to keep them all entertained throughout every month of the year.

Outdoor Adventure Play & Sandpit

As if our Centre doesn’t already offer enough outdoor activities and things to do, we go and top it off with our newly built outdoor play area and sandpit.  Children can let loose and pretend to be their favourite animal sculpture in a fun and safe way. They can zoom down the slide like a snake, swing on the climbing frames like a gorilla or crawl through the tunnel like a crocodile.  Our sandpit is open during the summer season and is a great way for children to learn physical and social skills through digging, building and exploring the way in which sand works. We also offer mini seasonal activities in the sandpit, from being an archaeologist and finding treasures in the sand to letting their creative juices flow by creating sand sculptures. Located opposite our Forge Café, parents can keep a watchful eye on their children whilst sampling our homemade cakes and locally sourced coffee.

Little Tikes Cars

Watch as your mini-me drives around the Centre in style with their first ever car. Don’t worry though parents, you’ve still got a few years yet before you get in the car with them! Free to use and located just outside our reception area, our large assortment of Little Tikes Cars, Tractors and Diggers will drive your little one’s imagination wild through active play. But, before you head off to pick up their new ride, head to our reception desk to collect an Ironworks Driving License, or otherwise, they won’t be road legal!

Bike Hire & Balance Bikes

Here at the Centre, we house a number of bicycles and electric buggies which are available to hire and can be used by the whole family. We also accommodate those who are still finding their ‘wheels’ by offering balance bikes, allowing you to teach your little one how to ride a bike in a safe open space which is full of colour and fascinating sculptures.  All you have to do is bring some enthusiasm and pedal power. With over 20-acres of park to explore, hiring a bike is the perfect and quickest way to tour the centre and its sculptures whilst getting some fresh air and exercise. Simply head to the showroom to book your ride.

Free Activity Nature Trails

Along with our five permanent exploration trails, which can be used by the whole family including the dog, we curate a number of trails throughout the year to encourage children to explore, learn and benefit from their time here at the Centre. Children’s trails are normally seasonal and are changed from year to year to keep them occupied time and time again.  Previous trails have included the Unicorn Trail, the Safari Trail and much much more! To find out more about our trails, please see our ‘What’s On’ page.

The Sculpture Park

Nicknamed the Metal Safari Park, our sculpture park features the largest collection of metal animal sculptures with over 100 on display within our 20-acre grounds, including our famous Spoon Gorilla and Giant Spider! Walk or hire a buggy or bike and explore the sculptures and exhibits we have on display.  Most of our sculptures feature an interpretation board with facts about the animal or information about how that metal sculpture was created and formed.  Don’t forget to collect our Metal Safari Trail from the showroom, which shows the designated and safest route to take whilst fully immersing your little ones in the animal world!

Seasonal Grottos

We run an annual Easter Grotto and Santa’s Grotto right here at the Centre every year. Our Easter Grotto is entirely themed around the Spring season and gives your little ones the opportunity to explore a fully decorated ‘Easter Woodland’ before meeting the Easter bunny himself and picking out their very own chocolate egg. Our Santa’s Grotto is a wonderfully festive and immersive experience which encourages children to explore a fully decked out ‘Winter Wonderland’ before meeting Mr and Mrs Claus in their cosy log cabin. All children also get to choose a gift to take home from Santa’s Toy Shop.

Every year, we add additional elements to our Grottos and always aim to improve the experience for every visitor, including the parents and carers. To find out more about this year’s Grottos and to get your tickets booked, please visit our ‘What’s On’ page. Tickets sell out very fast, so ensure you book yours as soon as you can to avoid any disappointment.
