Posters were the primary form of advertising prior to mass-market magazines, radio and television but after WW1 their use shifted more towards decorative or political purposes (think the propaganda poster from WW2 – Keep Calm and Carry On!)  French designers in particular were very avant-garde and the poster art of Parisian nightlife soon had an effect on their more conservative English contemporaries!
